Meet the Rockfig Rangers: Hanru and KG
We’re very fortunate to have such an exceptional team at Rockfig Lodge, and this month we’re shining a spotlight on our knowledgeable field guides, Hanru Nortje and KG Magano.
Becoming a field guide is no easy feat. It requires a combination of passion, knowledge, and rigorous training. Our guides undergo extensive preparation, including written exams, practical assessments, and certifications in other areas like professional driving and first aid. Both Hanru and KG hold the prestigious CATHSSETA NQF 2 Nature Site Guide qualification, a cornerstone of the industry.
KG: The Hyena Enthusiast
KG has been immersed in the Madikwe wilderness since 2009 and recently joined the Rockfig Lodge family. His deep-rooted connection to the reserve is evident in his enthusiasm and knowledge of the wildlife found in the reserve.
With a particular fondness for spotted hyena, KG shares fascinating insights into their complex social structure. He vividly recounts a thrilling encounter with a hyena clan vying for dominance, highlighting the intricate dynamics within their pack. His passion for these often-misunderstood creatures is contagious.
KG praises Madikwe for its exceptional game viewing opportunities, emphasising the reserve’s reputation as a haven for the Big Five and the elusive cheetah and wild dog, collectively known as the Super Seven. The added advantage of being malaria-free enhances the overall guest experience.
While the challenges of weather conditions can sometimes pose obstacles, KG finds immense satisfaction in connecting with people from diverse backgrounds and creating lasting memories. His journey from bartender to field guide is a testament to his curiosity and dedication.
An excellent tracker, KG seems to have a sixth sense when out searching for lion. He also always seems to capture the best videos, often featured on our Instagram stories. One of our favourite encounters that KG captured was a lioness and cub playing in the reserve.
Hanru: The Wildlife Whisperer
Hanru’s passion for the bush was ignited at a young age, and his four years of guiding experience, including two at Rockfig Lodge, have solidified his expertise.
His most unforgettable encounter involved a thrilling chase between an impala and a pack of wild dogs, culminating in a captivating spectacle. Hanru’s ability to balance ethical guiding with creating unforgettable experiences for guests is a testament to his skill.
He finds immense reward in sharing his passion with people from around the world, fostering connections and creating lasting memories. Hanru’s journey into the world of guiding was a natural progression of his lifelong fascination with the bush.
From rare sightings of civets to the heartwarming experience of encountering an 8 week old lion cub, Hanru’s encounters with wildlife continue to inspire him. Hanru has an incredible sense of humour, is very knowledgeable and makes every safari a fun adventure for every guest. An avid photographer, Hanru’s images are often featured on Rockfig’s social media pages.
Both Hanru and KG are invaluable assets to the Rockfig Lodge team, and their dedication to providing exceptional guest experiences is truly commendable. Their passion for the bush is infectious, and their knowledge is unparalleled.
