From First Light to Firelight: Your Stay at Rockfig Madikwe

Everyone always asks: what does a typical day on safari at Rockfig look like?

Well, look no further. Here’s a glimpse into what you can expect, from the moment you arrive to your final morning in the bush.

Day of Arrival

Our standard check-in time is 14h00, although we’re always happy to accommodate earlier arrivals where possible. Guests arriving early are welcome to relax at the main lodge – take a dip in the pool, settle into the lounge, or enjoy something from the fully stocked bar while your villa is prepared.

On arrival, you’ll be greeted with a refreshing (non-alcoholic) welcome drink. Our team will guide you through a brief orientation, assist with indemnities, and invite you to select your preferred beverages to be stocked in your villa.

From there, you’ll be escorted to your villa, via our photographic hide, where there’s often already wildlife gathering at the waterhole.

The afternoon is yours to unwind until around 14h00 (winter) or 14h30 (summer), when guests gather at the main lodge for high lunch (a combination of light lunch and high tea) before heading out on your first game drive.

Led by your experienced guide, you’ll venture into the reserve for approximately three hours. And of course, if the sightings are exceptional, you may stay out a little longer.

Midway through the drive, you’ll stop for one of safari’s most loved rituals: sundowners. Drinks and snacks are served in a scenic spot in the bush as the sun begins to set.

Back at the lodge, the evening continues around a crackling fire, followed by a delicious three-course dinner. On select evenings, guests can enjoy a more interactive experience such as pizza night, where you build your own, or a traditional boma dinner cooked over an open flame (weather permitting).

Then, it’s off to bed—ready for the next day’s adventure.

A Full Day at Rockfig

The day begins early, 05h00 in summer and 05h30 in winter, with coffee and a light continental breakfast at the main lodge before heading out on your morning game drive.

As the bush comes alive, this is one of the best times for wildlife sightings.

You’ll return to the lodge around 08h30–09h00 for a leisurely full breakfast. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy at your own pace – whether that’s relaxing by the pool, visiting the hide, or simply soaking in the stillness from your private villa.

In the afternoon, guests reconvene at around 14h00 (winter) or 14h30 (summer) for high lunch before heading out on the afternoon game drive.

No two drives are ever the same and that’s the magic of safari.

Day of Departure

On your final morning, you’ll head out for one last game drive followed by breakfast back at the lodge.

After breakfast, it’s time to pack up and check out by 11h00 though the memories of your time at Rockfig will stay with you long after you leave.

Guests staying in Inkwe Villa, or those who have booked a private vehicle, also have the flexibility to tailor their game drive times. For longer stays, you may even opt for a full-day game drive within the reserve (subject to availability), offering a deeper and more immersive safari experience.
