A Journey Off The Beaten Track

There’s something quietly magical about setting out on a long game drive, not just for the wildlife you might see, but for the unexpected moments along the way.

At Rockfig, a six-hour game drive offers exactly that. Led by your expert safari guide, the journey takes you off the more travelled paths of the Madikwe Game Reserve, towards a hidden corner few visitors get to experience – a series of lesser-known bat caves tucked into the landscape.

Here, the bushveld shifts. The wide, open plains give way to something more intimate and ancient. You’ll have the rare opportunity to step inside the caves themselves, moving through cool, shadowed chambers where colonies of bats rest overhead. If you’re lucky, you might even spot resident owls quietly nesting in the stillness.

But it’s not just what you see; it’s what you feel. As your guide shares stories of the people who once lived within these caves, the space begins to take on a deeper meaning. These were once homes, places of shelter and daily life, and many believe the presence of ancestors still lingers here. There’s a quiet energy to it, something you can’t quite explain, but certainly notice.

After exploring, the experience shifts once more. You’ll pause for a bush stop with refreshments, perfectly positioned between two worlds – the caves behind you, and the vast Madikwe plains stretching out ahead. It’s the kind of setting that makes you stop and take it all in.

From there, the drive continues, with wildlife sightings along the way as you make your way to a second, carefully chosen location. Beneath the shade of lush trees, a bush picnic awaits. Here, the pace slows completely. A selection of sweet and savoury snacks is laid out, alongside a beautifully curated gin bar offering a variety of gins, garnishes, and tonics. A simple but memorable way to spend an afternoon in the African bushveld.

This is more than just a game drive. It’s a layered experience; one that blends wildlife, history, culture, and a touch of indulgence in some of Madikwe’s most scenic and secluded spots.

This experience is available to guests staying four nights or longer, and is subject to availability and weather conditions.
