Madikwe’s Conservation Success: A Testament to Collaborative Effort
The Madikwe Game Reserve stands as a beacon of conservation success, and we are proud to be a part of it. Here are some remarkable facts that highlight our collective achievements:
- Lions of Madikwe: The reserve is home to approximately 35 lions, a testament to the thriving predator population.
- Cheetah Guardians: Our 11 cheetah are meticulously monitored, with all adults collared and tracked in partnership with the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT). This ensures their health and well-being are consistently assessed.
- Wild Dog Wonders: Two packs of wild dogs, totalling 16 individuals, roam Madikwe. Key members of each pack are collared and tracked via GPS, particularly during full moons when they can cover distances of up to 60km.
- Research and Discovery: We actively welcome researchers who contribute to our understanding of both the animal populations and the reserve’s unique vegetation.
- Advanced Anti-Poaching Measures: A network of strategically placed cameras enhances our anti-poaching efforts, ensuring the safety of all our wildlife.
- Rhino Protection: Madikwe has achieved a remarkable milestone, maintaining over a year without a rhino poaching incident, thanks to vigilant monitoring and proactive conservation strategies.

Sustainable Practices at Rockfig Lodge: Lightening Our Footprint
At Rockfig Madikwe, we are committed to minimizing our environmental impact through sustainable practices:
- Harnessing Solar Power: We have recently installed solar panels, significantly reducing our reliance on traditional energy sources and contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable operation.
- Eliminating Single-Use Plastics: Every guest receives a reusable stainless steel water bottle upon arrival, significantly reducing plastic waste.
- Innovative Water Management: The green roofs on property are specially designed to capture rainwater and condensation, which is then filtered through our water treatment plant and recycled for use in our villas.
- Locally Sourced Produce: Our herb garden provides fresh tomatoes, green peppers, limes, lemons, chillis, and more, which are used in our kitchen, promoting sustainable food practices.
- Community Partnerships: We collaborate with a member of the local community who collects waste and delivers wood to redistribute leftover food to the community, reducing waste and supporting local needs.
- Educational Support: Field Guide Kagiso Magano is in the process of leading an initiative to support a local school, creating a needs checklist and to facilitate donations.
- Staff Empowerment: We invest in our team’s professional development, with recent First Aid training sessions and ongoing learning opportunities.
